Ghosts of Violence

I can honestly say that I have never been to a ballet. I love the theatre and have been to many a musical, however ballet is not something that ever appealed to me. That all changed last month when I learned about The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada and their Toronto debut performance of Ghosts of Violence.

While maintaining artistic excellence, the core values of the Company are: Strengthening Communities, Promoting Inclusivity, and Positively Impacting People. They do this through community engagement and education in programs like Build a Ballet where children from diverse backgrounds go on a journey of discovery and exploration in costume design, lighting, sets and music as they get a hands-on experience in creating a ballet.

Ghosts of Violence is an emotionally charged work inspired by the lives of women who have lost their lives at the hands of an intimate partner. Through evocative lighting, theatre, music and multimedia, the ballet captures the memory of these silent victims and tells stories of their struggles, their hopes, their joys and our loss.

True to their commitment of strengthening communities, The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is supporting the work of The Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (WomanACT). Purchase your premium seats from WomanACT and receive a charitable tax donation for a portion the ticket price.

Swaying Tuesdays

As I’m packing my video camera getting ready for our Ottawa trip where Dakota Starr  will perform at the Grassroots Women’s Festival this weekend, I came across another clip from our night out at Duffy’s last month.

As soon as The Swaying Tuesdays started their set, I knew I was hooked! Their Reverbnation Page describes them as “an unstoppable indie explosion” and we here at the Cafe completely agree. Their sound is a mix of rock n’ roll,  punk, pop and anything else you can imagine all rolled into one great sound.

We are looking forward to a working with them on a joint collaboration with Dakota Starr soon. Here is a clip from their show on July 14th.

Oh So Beautiful

Today, a rising trend in Toronto’s music scene is that of the pay-to-play performance. Too many musicians are being shortchanged by promoters and having to pay just to get on stage and perform, but this time musicians are running the show.

For their hard work and talent, musicians should always be compensated, no matter how small the reward, and they should never have to pay to bare their souls and share their gifts. That’s why Oh So Beautiful has created; a platform designed to put the power of performance back into to the hands of the musicians. No promoters, just performers promoting each other and working together to create greater opportunities for themselves.

For artists, this may just be the beginning, but for Toronto’s money-hungry promoters who care less about the music than they do about the money, it’s just the beginning of the end. All levels of the music industry must recognize that what musicians have to offer is…

Going Back in Time

Last week I mentioned that I was spending some quality time with my pretend husband, Johnny Depp. This week that meant going back to 1985 for a film called Private Resort.

There are a few familiar faces in this one, other than Johnny of course, including Andrew Dice Clay, Rob Morrow and a very young Hector Elizondo.  It’s about two teenage boys (Johnny and Rob) who are spending the weekend at a resort; Their only interest is chasing girls and they get into all kinds of trouble trying to get some.

It’s the 80’s so the hair is big and there is nothing particularly great about this movie except for one thing; I got to see Johnny’s bare butt – that’s right, my first look at Johnny’s ass and oh what an ass it is. This is one happy girl right here!

Not sure what I’m going to watch this week but I’m leaning towards What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. What’s your favourite Johnny movie?

This week I’ve been cleaning up the movie database on my media centre and more specifically my Johnny Depp collection. For those of you that know me or follow my blog, you know that I have been in a pretend marriage to Johnny Depp for over 20 year now. Seeing as it is the longest relationship I have been in, I thought I should dedicate a little time to him and have a weekly Johnny night.

This week’s movie feature is Once Upon a Time in Mexico with a great cast including Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Mickey Rourke, Eva Mendes, Danny Trejo, Enrique Iglesias, Cheech Marin and if that’s not enough, another favourite of mine, Willem Dafoe.

The film was released in 2003 and is the final chapter in the El Mariachi trilogy starting in 1992; all written, produced and directed by Robert Rodriquez. It is about a hit-man that becomes involved in international espionage involving a psychotic CIA agent (Depp), the drug cartel and a corrupt Mexican general.

Depp’s character, Sands, follows his own moral code and “keeps the balance” in Mexican society. It’s the first time we hear Johnny say ‘savvy’ which he regularly uses in the Pirate movies but my favourite quote from this movie is “Are you a Mexi-Can or a Mexi-Can’t”

What do I love about Johnny in this movie? He’s crazy, wears cheesy outfits, has great one-liners and, of course, damn he looks good! What I don’t enjoy so much is that he gets his eyes removed with a power drill by a henchman working for the cartel; but that doesn’t stop him from winning a shoot-out – that’s my man!

The Remix Project

We recently learned of a new program that we want to share with you; The Remix Project offers programs that serve youth trying to enter into the creative industries. They help refine the raw talents of young people from across the GTA and help them find success on their own terms. The team guide youth through their career choices and six-month plans; they work one on one with young people to provide guidance and feedback in greater detail. The facility is 5,000 square feet with a full recording studio, photography studio, business development centre, creative arts lab, video editing suite & more.

Acoustic Sundays

We have been enjoying many acoustic afternoons in the city of Toronto so far this spring and look forward to continuing to do so right through the summer.

Here is a great act we caught on College street last week at the Jang Bang Bar (430.5 College Street). Singer/Songwriter Ellie Anderson is joined by her friend Jeff. The song is called Midnight and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

The Fast Romantics

With an attitude reminiscent of The Magnetic Zeros and a sound screaming Smiley Smile (the Beach Boys) meets Arcade Fire, The Fast Romantics new EP might just be the dream of hipster kids everywhere.

The EP starts off with a tune that sounds as if taken straight out of another era. Chronicling the melody and tempo of a classic Bobby Darin song, it’s infused with vocals that are of the fashion of Emily Haines. While the song sounds like something better suited to a Duncan Sheik musical than what you’d expect on an indie band from Calgary’s EP, it is highly enjoyable on those days where you just want to forget your troubles and accept ignorance as bliss (Lesley Gore anyone?) while clapping along.

The 60’s drums and guitars on the preceding track ‘Denim Tuxedo’ sound like something pulled straight off of ‘A Nod Is as Good as a Wink… to a Blind Horse’ and the vocals are a fusion of rock meets country that harmonize perfectly to create a perfect atmosphere for a good old fashioned swing dance.

If Vampire Weekend ever met Freddie Mercury, ‘Pretty Strangers’ would be the aforementioned love child I would expect to find. You can really hear Redekopp’s influence on this track with my initial reaction comparing it to anything by ‘Tegan and Sara’.

‘Union Park’ is extremely typical and interchangeable with any song you’ve heard or could imagine Adam Levine sing(ing), however the vocalist (Mathew) of ‘The Fast Romantics’ provides an insight and depth that the Maroon 5 front man himself could never accomplish.

With an accordion beginning to hype up the optimism before you’ve even heard the first line, the final track ‘Last Night’ evokes in me imagery of what would happen if ‘The New Pornographers’ rewrote ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ swapping the Christmas theme for a bittersweet reminiscence of jollier times. This is the tune one might find ideal while rocking their thick-rimmed glasses and riding a bicycle.

If Fesit and Alex Ebert ever collaborated to write an album influenced by a time gone past this album would be the euphoria I would expect to result.

(2009) Starring Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor and Leslie Mann

I just love movies that surprise me and this one kept doing it! A true story – as hard as that is to believe – of a U.S. con man, Steven Russell. Jim Carrey does a fabulous job portraying this family man with a secret. After a car accident, Steven decides he can’t live a lie anymore and openly admits his homosexuality to himself, his wife and the world.

Shortly after diving into the gay scene, he realizes his new lifestyle has become quite expensive so he finds himself pulling all types of scams to afford it. From phoney insurance claims, credit card and passport fraud to selling bad tomatoes; he does it all to live his flamboyant life.

It doesn’t take long for the authorities to catch up with him and that’s when things really get interesting! While in prison he reads law books and falls in love with fellow inmate, Phillip Morris. After his release, he poses as a lawyer and gets his lover out of jail early. From there he continues to practice law and then lands a job as a CFO where he learns the art of embezzling.

Steven Russell escapes from prison several more times much to the embarrassment to the state of Texas and Governor George Bush. I can’t tell you anymore without giving away some great twists and turns that I want you to enjoy on your own.

I’m giving this one a 4 out 5 star rating for being hilarious, touching at times and then there’s the surprise factor. ☆☆☆☆
